Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 5/23-5/25 (Memorial Day Weekend)

Welcome to another edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this weekend were X-Men: Days of Future Past, Godzilla, and Blended.

Memorial Day weekend proved to be a great one for movie theaters, bringing in a domestic total of over $215 million between the Top 10 films this week.  X-Men: Days of Future Past led the box office, with Godzilla and the brand-new Sandler/Barrymore comedy, Blended following right behind.

FROZEN UPDATE:  In its 27th week on the big screen, Frozen has officially become the fifth highest-grossing film of all time with a worldwide total of $1.22 billion, beating out last years powerhouse, Iron Man 3.  This also makes it the highest grossing film of 2013, with the aforementioned Iron Man 3 close behind.

Let's take a look at how the Top 3 did this weekend...

1. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

The return of Bryan Singer to the universe he created has brought us the greatest X-Men film ever seen, X-Men: Days of Future Past.  The seventh film in this franchise managed to bring in a staggering $110.6 million.  Combined with the foreign grosses, X-Men: DOFP made of total of $301.6 million, which is the highest worldwide opening weekend for any of the X-Men films, and is sure to be one of the top grossing films of 2014.

2. GODZILLA

Godzilla did very well at the box office this weekend, bringing in $38.4 million.  That puts its domestic total up to $155.8 million and its worldwide total to $322.4 million.  An impressive weekend for this film, seeing as it had to go up against the amazing new X-Men film.

3. BLENDED

The new Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore film, Blended, the third starring these two, flopped this weekend, bringing in a mere $17.7 million domestically and $19.8 million worldwide on a $40 million production budget.  The expectation was that by reuniting these two, the film was bound to draw ticket sales, but a weak story mixed with going up against the highly anticipated X-Men: Days of Future Past was fatal for this lackluster comedy.  Perhaps Sandler needs to step away from comedy, do a couple serious roles, and then come back to the genre he became so well known for.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - X-Men: Days of Future Past - $110,576,604

#2 - Godzilla - $38,437,298

#3 - Blended - $17,735,205
