Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 11/22-11/24

Welcome to another edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss the weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this week are The Hunger Games: Catching FireThor: The Dark World, and The Best Man Holiday.

This week The Hunger Games: Catching Fire destroyed the box office, breaking records and even making it into the Top 10 Opening Weekends.  However, the new Vince Vaughn movie, Delivery Man, failed to make a splash, taking the #4 spot with less than $8 million, which doesn't bode well for the funnyman's newest comedy.

1.  THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

Another smash-hit sequel has hit the big screens this November with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.  Following the events of the first film, Katniss and Peeta become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem.  Bringing in an astonishing $158.1 million domestically, Catching Fire came in #6 on the Top Grossing Opening Weekend list and broke the record for Opening Weekend in November, beating out Twilight: New Moon by over $15 million and even topping the first Hunger Games movie by more than $5 million.  I'm sure this film will stay in the number 1 spot for the next few weeks, until The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters.

2.  THOR: THE DARK WORLD

Thor: The Dark World has continued to do well at the box office.  This weekend, it drew in $14.2 million domestically, bringing its domestic total to $167.9 million, and $548.9 million worldwide.  Only 3 weeks in to its run, Thor: The Dark World is on its way to being a top grossing movie, and will definitely be in the Top 5 for the year of 2013, joining the likes of Iron Man 3, Catching Fire, and the upcoming The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

3. THE BEST MAN HOLIDAY

The surprise hit, The Best Man Holiday, continues to impress, coming very close again to beating out Thor: The Dark World, bringing in $12.5 million, for a 10-day total of $50.4 million on a modest $17 million production budget.  Will it be able to stay in the top 3 for a third week? With the upcoming release of Disney's Frozen, I have a feeling we won't be seeing this one in the Top 3 any longer.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - $158,074,286

#2 - Thor: The Dark World - $14,196,302

#3 - The Best Man Holiday - $12,490,920

Next week will most likely still be dominated by Hunger Games: Catching Fire, followed by either the opening of Disney's Frozen or Thor: The Dark World in its forth week, or perhaps we'll all be surprised and see Homefront take the #3 spot.  Join us next week for the scoop on WEEKEND ROUNDUP!
