Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 12/13-12/15

Welcome to this weeks edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this weekend were The Hobbit: The Desolation of SmaugDisney's Frozen, and Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas.

This week, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug took a hefty lead over Disney's Frozen, taking the crown for the #1 spot this week.  But the most impressive feat for the week came in the form of Catching Fire losing out to Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas.  Let's see how they all did...

1. THE HOBBIT:  THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

In its debut weekend, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug managed to bring in a decent chunk of change, making $73.6 million, 13% less than the first Hobbit film, which set the December record with $84.6 million.  When the first film came out, there had been 9 years of pent-up demand for another journey to Middle Earth.  With a slight disappointment from some of the LOTR fans, it's not a surprise that the sequel was able to perform up to par with the first.  That's not to say it did poorly, because by no means is that true.  Hopefully, word-of-mouth will spread about how good this film is and more people will come out to see it over the next few weeks.

2. DISNEY'S FROZEN

Next on the list is Frozen.  The newest Disney animated film has been doing great at the box office, staying in the Top 2 ever since it opened.  This weekend, it brought in $22.6 million, an impressive amount for a fourth-week movie.  Not even films like Catching Fire, Thor 2, Despicable Me 2, and Wreck-It Ralph could manage to do that.  That brings it's domestic total up to $166.4 million and it's worldwide total up to $267.9 million.  With numbers like that, this film is well on its way to breaking $500 million worldwide before it's done.

3. TYLER PERRY'S A MADEA CHRISTMAS

Making a surprising claim to the #3 spot this week is the newest edition to the Tyler Perry collection, A Madea Christmas.  Perry's newest film was able to push out the heavy hitter, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire from the Top 3, bringing in $16 million on its opening weekend.  An impressive feat indeed.  But with so many interesting-looking movies coming out over the next two weeks, will it be able to hold on?

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - $73,645,197

#2 - Disney's Frozen - $22,568,138

#3 - Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas - $16,007,634

Join us next week when we discuss a number of upcoming films including Anchorman 2, American Hustle, Saving Mr. Banks, Walking With Dinosaurs, and Her.  Which movies will be in the Top 3?  Can The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hold on to the top spot?  Or will a newcomer take the throne?  Check out next weeks WEEKEND ROUNDUP for the scoop!
