Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 12/20-12/22

Welcome to this weeks edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this weekend were The Hobbit: The Desolation of SmaugDisney's Frozen, and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

This week, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was able to maintain the top spot while Disney's Frozen dropped one.  Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues opened strong, managing to secure the the #2 spot with a decent opening weekend.  Let's see how they all did...

1. THE HOBBIT:  THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

In its second weekend, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug managed to bring in a respectable amount, making $31.5 million.  This is a 57% drop from last week, which happens to be the same amount that the first film dropped in its second week.  This brings it's domestic total up to $127.6 million, and it's worldwide total up to $403.8 million.  With a slew of films coming out for Christmas, will the second Hobbit film be able to hold on to the top spot?  I definitely think it'll be in the Top 3, but we'll have to wait and see what place it takes.

2. ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES

Taking the #2 spot this weekend is the new Will Ferrell movie, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.  Bringing in $26.8 million on its opening 3-day weekend ($40 million over the 5-day weekend), this hilarious sequel to the instant classic from back in 2004, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, is certain to do well.  After nearly a decade of anticipation, this film didn't disappoint.  It brought much of the humor from the first film and mixed it with shades of Ferrell's other films.  A must see for any Will Ferrell fan.  But the question remains...will we see it in the Top 3 next week?  Only time will tell.

3. DISNEY'S FROZEN

Next on the list is Frozen.  The newest Disney animated film has been doing well at the box office, staying in the Top 3 ever since it opened, five weeks ago.  This weekend, it brought in $19.6 million.  That brings it's domestic total up to $192 million and it's worldwide total up to $344.6 million.  And as I stated last week, with numbers like that, this film is well on its way to breaking $500 million worldwide before it's done.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - $31,505,278

#2 - Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - $26,776,000

#3 - Disney's Frozen - $19,642,107

Join us next week when we discuss the Christmas releases.  Which movies will be in the Top 3?  Can The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hold on to the top spot for a third week?  Or will a newcomer take the throne?  Check out next weeks WEEKEND ROUNDUP for the scoop!
