Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 12/25-12/29 (Christmas)

Welcome to the Christmas edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weeks box office results for the 5-day holiday weekend.  The TOP 3 this weekend were once again The Hobbit: The Desolation of SmaugDisney's Frozen, and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.

This week, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was able to maintain the top spot for the third week in a row, while Disney's Frozen returned to the #2 spot.  Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues continued strong, managing to secure the the #3 spot with a nice second weekend.

This Christmas saw the opening of several films, none of which were able to secure a spot in the Top 3 this week, though one did come close.  Taking the fourth spot was the new Martin Scorsese film, The Wolf of Wall Street.  Also released this holiday weekend was The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (#6), 47 Ronin (#8), and Grudge Match (#10).

Let's see how the Top 3 did...

1. THE HOBBIT:  THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

In its third weekend, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug dominated the box office, managing to bring in $29 million over the 3-day weekend and $48.9 million for the 5-day.  This brings it's domestic total up to $189.5 million, and it's worldwide total up to $613.3 million.  With he brand new Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones coming out this Friday will the second Hobbit film be able to hold on to the top spot for a fourth week?  It'll definitely be in the Top 3, but we'll have to wait and see if it can keep the lead.

2. DISNEY'S FROZEN

Next on the list is Frozen.  The newest Disney animated film has been doing very well at the box office, staying in the Top 3 ever since it opened, six weeks ago.  This weekend it managed to do much better than last, reclaiming the #2 spot and bringing in $28.6 million for the 3-day weekend and $44.1 million for the 5-day.  That brings it's domestic total up to $248.1 million and it's worldwide total up to $491.6 million.  And as I've said for the last few weeks, this film is well on its way to breaking $500 million worldwide before it's done.  In fact, it should break that by the end of Wednesday.

3. ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES

Taking the #3 spot this weekend is Will Ferrell's newest movie, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.  Bringing in $20.2 million for the 3-day weekend and $35.6 million for the 5-day, this hilarious sequel to the instant classic from back in 2004, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, is certainly doing well.  After nearly a decade of anticipation, this film didn't disappoint in content nor has it disappointed financially.  But the question remains...will we see it in the Top 3 next week?  Or will the opening of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones push it out?  Only time will tell.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - $29,040,000 (3-day), $48,870,000 (5-day)

#2 - Disney's Frozen - $28,596,319 (3-day), $44,059,244 (5-day)

#3 - Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues - $20,150,000 (3-day), $35,614,000 (5-day)

Join us next week for the first Top 3 of the new year.  Which movies will be on top?  Can The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hold on to the top spot for a third week?  Or will the newcomer, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones take the throne?  Check out next weeks WEEKEND ROUNDUP for the scoop!
