Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 1/3-1/5

Welcome to another edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this weekend were The Hobbit: The Desolation of SmaugDisney's Frozen, and the new release, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.

This week, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug dropped two spots, while Disney's Frozen reclaimed the coveted #1 spot.  Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones opened fairly strong in the second spot, but will it be able to hang on?  Let's take a look at how the Top 3 did this weekend...

1. DISNEY'S FROZEN

Over the last six weeks, Frozen has been kicking ass at the box office, reclaiming the top spot during this very frigid winter weekend.  Earning $19.6 million domestically, Frozen has officially brought in the third highest sixth weekend ever, right behind Avatar ($34.9 million) and Titanic ($25.2 million).  It is also the first movie to take the top spot in its sixth week since Avatar back in January 2010.  Frozen has grossed a domestic total of $296.7 million and a worldwide total of $638.8 million.  This film isn't showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon.  Will it break $800 million worldwide?  Stay tuned to find out.

2. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE MARKED ONES

The fifth installment and first spin-off in the Paranormal Activity franchise opened this weekend to a decent amount, bringing in $18.3 million on a micro-budget of only $5 million.  With the addition of the foreign market, they were able to almost double that for a worldwide total of $34.5 million.  This very profitable series has finally began branching out from the core story, allowing for more films and interesting storylines.  The next film, Paranormal Activity 5, will hit theaters on October 24, 2014.

3. THE HOBBIT:  THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

For the first three weeks, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has reigned supreme.  But going into its fourth weekend, it has finally been dethroned, dropping two spots.  Domestically, it was able to bring in $15.7 million this week, bringing its total up to $229.1 million and it's worldwide total to $756.1 million.  Will it be able to follow in the footsteps of the first Hobbit film, and join the $1 Billion Club, or will it fall short?  Stay with us over the next several weeks and we'll keep you informed if it does.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - Disney's Frozen - $19,575,525

#2 - Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones - $18,343,611

#3 - The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - $15,675,220
