Movie Score Mania: The Lego Movie

The LEGO Movie score by legendary musician Mark Mothersbaugh is just as hyper and vast as the film itself. In fact, it's such a pumped up score that I listen to it in the gym. Though, it would be better suited for a hardcore parkour session, it's that crazy.

It's hard not to talk about The LEGO Movie soundtrack without hitting upon one of the greatest satire songs of the 21st century, Everything is Awesome by Tegan and Sera featuring The Lonely Island. Why is it the best? Because, it is sung by indie-pop duo Tegan and Sara, who believe in the power of individuality. While the song itself is all about conformity and being part of the team. On top of that, Everything is Awesome is the poppiest song in their arsenal. It's practically a Katy Perry song with it's overly cliched anthemy lyrics. The chocolate frosting on this cake is that, The Lonely Island have interjected their unique and hilarious raps into the mix. So, everything is awesome about Everything is Awesome.

Parts of the score are Mark Mothersbaugh going nuts in the studio and having a blast; while building upon classic epic movie score tropes. For example, Into the West sounds like a Ennio Morricone score with it's twangy mouth harp and whistling. Then there's a track like The Transformation where Lord of the Rings choral verses mash against electric blips and rhythms. Then there are pieces like Escape where Mark's true genius shines through. Don't believe me? Listen for yourself.

If you find yourself enjoying the sounds The LEGO Movie soundtrack has to offer. Then check out Dan Deacon and Math the Band.

I would also like to take a second to recognize the passing of Mark's former band mate, Bob Casale the guitarist for DEVO. Rest in peace.
