Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 5/16-5/18

Welcome to another edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this weekend were The Amazing Spider-ManNeighbors, and Godzilla.

Godzilla destroyed the box office this week like a little Japanese fishing town, and even managed to score the biggest opening day box office of 2014, bringing in $38.5 million on Friday.  Neighbors has continued to do well, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had another big drop this week.

FROZEN UPDATE:  In its 26th week on the big screen, Frozen has inched closer to taking the #5 spot with a worldwide total of $1.206 billion.  This puts it less than $10 million away from beating out Iron Man 3 and claiming a spot in the Top 5 highest grossing films of all time, a feat I am confident it will succeed at by next weekend.

Let's take a look at how the Top 3 did this weekend...

1. GODZILLA

This week's powerhouse film was Godzilla.  A fresh take on a classic monster icon, Godzilla crushed the box office, bringing in a very impressive $93.2 million.  When combined with its oversees draw, we saw a worldwide total of $196.6 million on a $160 million production budget.  This film is well on its way to making big money, and with a sequel already announced, it's only going to go up from here.

2. NEIGHBORS

2014's best comedy so far is definitely the new Seth Rogan/Zac Efron film, Neighbors, which has continued to draw in an impressive audience in its second week out.  This weekend, it brought in $25.1 million, putting its domestic total at $90.6 million and its worldwide total at a whopping $145.4 on a mere $18 million production budget.

3. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 saw another significant drop this week, bringing in a modest $16.8 million, a 52.7% drop from last weekend.  This puts its domestic total at $172.2 million and its worldwide total at $633.2 million.  But seeing as it's only in its third week, I have no doubt that ASM2 will break the $750 million mark, something that all four other Spider-Man films have successfully achieved.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - Godzilla - $93,188,384

#2 - Neighbors - $25,065,895

#3 - The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $16,803,227
