Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was everything I wanted it to be and more. Before seeing the film, a friend of mine said to me "it's beautiful when it needs to be beautiful, and greatly intense when it's required". I had no idea how right he'd be.
This film was beautiful, brilliant, and captivating. It made you think, feel, and react to the situations these characters (yes, including the apes) were put in. Simply put, I was in awe of this film. It has been awhile since a sci-fi film has made me feel as deeply as this film did, especially the scenes with Caesar and his family.
Helmed by Cloverfield director, Matt Reeves, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes brings us a decade into the future. A devastating virus has wiped out most of the world's population, and those left are struggling to survive. As tensions rise between the humans and the apes, their fragile peace comes to an end, and war quickly approaches.
The master of Motion Capture, Andy Serkis (Gollum from LOTR and The Hobbit), returns as Caesar, leader of the apes. His performance in this film is masterful. The emotion and depth he was able to bring to this character was astonishing. But he wasn't alone in this film. He worked with a wonderful cast, consisting of Keri Russell, Jason Clarke, and Gary Oldman, just to name a few.
Jason Clarke was a great substitution for James Franco, playing Malcolm, the leader of a small group who tries to make peace with the apes, and bonds with Caesar in the process, and I can watch Gary Oldman in just about anything.
This film kept me at the edge of my seat, waiting to see what would happen next, and not once did it disappoint. I'm excited to see where they go in the next installment, which is tentatively scheduled for sometime in 2016. So, make sure you check out Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, if you haven't already. It's a must-see.
