Welcome to this weeks edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results. The TOP 3 this weekend were Disney's Frozen, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and Out Of The Furnace.
This week, Disney's Frozen unexpectedly took the lead, beating out The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and preventing it from taking the top spot three weeks in a row. An impressive feat for an animated film going up against a juggernaut like this. But that wasn't the only surprise. The other has to do with Out Of The Furnace and how it managed to make it to the TOP 3, even though it didn't do nearly as well as hoped, bringing in less than 20% of what Catching Fire did this weekend. Let's see how they all did...
In its third week, Frozen managed to do the unthinkable by beating out The Hunger Games: Catching Fire for the top spot, bringing in an impressive $31.6 million, the best post-Thanksgiving gross ever. This brings its domestic total up to $134.3 million and its worldwide total to $190.2 million. Despite its name, this animated film is just heating up and will surely continue to score big at the box office in the coming weeks, especially once schools are on Christmas break.
2. THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE
After two spectacular weeks on top, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has began losing traction, dropping 65% from Thankgiving weekend, for a total of $26.2 million this weekend. This brings it up to $335.9 million domestically and $672.6 million worldwide, and will hopefully break $750 million by Christmas. However, with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opening this week, it will definitely be a challenge.
3. OUT OF THE FURNACE
The final film on our TOP 3 list is the new Christian Bale film, Out Of The Furnace. This film is Scott Cooper's second time in the directors chair, the first being Crazy Heart, in which Jeff Bridges won several awards for best actor, including an Oscar. Will Bale have the same luck? Only time will tell.
The film opened to a rather disappointing amount, bringing in only $5.2 million on its opening weekend, more than $20 million less than the number 2 spot, Catching Fire. It did, however, do better than Cooper's first directorial effort, which brought in $3.6 million on its opening weekend. The difference, though, is that Crazy Heart had a production budget of only $7 million, whereas Out Of The Furnace cost $22 million. Will it be able to make that money back? I hope so, but with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hitting theaters this Friday, there's no way it'll stay in the TOP 3.
