Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 1/10-1/12

Welcome to another edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this weekend were Lone Survivor, Disney's Frozen, and The Legend of Hercules.

This week, Disney's Frozen dropped one spot, but for a movie in its seventh week to still be in the Top 3 is impressive.  Lone Survivor opened strong, taking the top spot, while The Legend of Hercules did much weaker, barely making it on the list.

Let's take a look at how the Top 3 did this weekend...

1. LONE SURVIVOR

Writer/Director, Peter Berg, has finally made amends for the train wreck that was Battleship, with his latest film, Lone Survivor.  In this film, starring Mark Wahlberg, we see the true story of four members of SEAL Team 10 who were tasked with the mission to capture or kill notorious Taliban leader Ahmad Shahd.

Lone Survivor blew away the competition, bringing in $37.8 million for its wide release opening weekend.  Adding in the limited release numbers, this film has made a total of $38.2 million on a $40 million production budget.  And with several weeks to go, it will definitely be profitable.

2. DISNEY'S FROZEN

What an impressive feat of staying power this film has.  A lock for Best Animated Picture this year, Frozen has been crushing it at the box office.  Seven weeks since it's wide release, this film has not dropped out of the Top 3.  In fact, last week it reclaimed #1, and only fell one spot amid all the new releases this week.

Frozen managed to bring in another $14.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $317.3 million and its worldwide total to $711.9 million.  This fun, family film is well on its way to breaking the $1 billion mark. Only one animated film has ever managed to do that, Toy Story 3, which, by its seventh weekend, had brought in $655.2 million worldwide, $56.7 million LESS than Frozen.  Can it break the record for highest grossing animated film of all time?  Only time will tell.

3. THE LEGEND OF HERCULES

For a film about one of the strongest beings on Earth, The Legend of Hercules definitely didn't measure up.  Starting off with a rather weak opening, it brought in only $8.9 million.  It only managed to make it into the Top 3 by beating out The Wolf of Wall Street, which is in its third week, by a mere $29,098.  On a $70 million production budget, the studio will be lucky to make their money back.  Perhaps, if the film is good, word of mouth will spread and ticket sales will rise over the next couple weeks, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - Lone Survivor - $37,849,910

#2 - Disney's Frozen - $14,728,118

#3 - The Legend of Hercules - $8,868,318
