Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 2/14-2/17 (Valentine's Day/President's Day Weekend)

Welcome to another edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this weekend were The LEGO Movie, About Last Night, and RoboCop.

This past Valentine's Day/President's Day weekend was a great one for film.  From the new animated juggernaut, The LEGO Movie, to the very funny remake, About Last Night, and the action-packed PG-13 reboot of the 80's classic, RoboCop, the box office has been packed.  We even saw the new romantic film, Endless Love, do well, coming in at #5.  Winter's Tale, on the other hand, didn't do as well, landing the #8 spot with $8 million on a $60 million production budget.  Personally, I think most of this is due to poor marketing, because I saw the film, and it was pretty good.

And on a side note, the Academy Award nominated Frozen has come a little closer to breaking records, bringing in almost $100 million in the last two weeks.  It's now only $43 million away from breaking into the Billion Dollar Club, and just over $100 million away for becoming the highest grossing animated film of all time.

Let's take a look at how the Top 3 did this weekend...

1. THE LEGO MOVIE

In its second week, the wonderfully entertaining The LEGO Movie has crushed it again.  Dominating the top spot this week, The LEGO Movie brought in $62.5 million, a mere 9.5% drop from its opening weekend total.  This makes two weeks in a row that this film has been able to make more than its production budget in just a weekend.  This puts The LEGO Movie's domestic total at $142.8 million and it's worldwide total at $194 million.

2. ABOUT LAST NIGHT

This new romantic comedy remake, About Last Night, opened up to an impressive $27.8 million on its first weekend out.  This is the best opening for a romantic comedy since 2012's Think Like A Man, also starring Kevin Hart.  This is a great opening for a film with such a low production budget, $12.5 million, and with the role Kevin Hart's been on, I wouldn't be surprised if a sequel was put into the works, especially since we'll be getting Think Like A Man Too later this year.

3. ROBOCOP

The new PG-13 reboot of the intensely graphic, 80's cult classic, RoboCop, has performed significantly better than initially expected.  Bringing in $25.1 million this weekend, RoboCop has the potential of being very profitable for the studio.  Adding to its first two days, it's has brought in a domestic total of $30 million, and a worldwide total of $99.9 million, just a little shy of its $100 million production budget.  Will it be profitable enough and well-received enough to warrant a sequel?  Only time will tell.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - The LEGO Movie - $62,478,466

#2 - About Last Night - $27,838,201

#3 - RoboCop - $25,061,581
