Trailer Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

After watching the first official trailer for Marvel's newest film, Guardians of the Galaxy, I only had one word to describe it...perfect.  Check it out below.

SYNOPSIS:
From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team--the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits--Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand--with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

This was exactly what I wanted from a first trailer.  It showcased Chris Pratt in a way that proves he was the perfect choice for the role of Peter Quill/Star-Lord.  You don't get much from the other characters, but that's ok.  There are most likely be at least 2-3 more trailers and any number of shorter TV spots yet to come, so I'm not too worried.

What I wanted from this trailer was to get a sense of who Star-Lord is, the tone of the film, and at least a glimpse at the other characters, and I got exactly that, and more.  We get nice, simple introductions to the other four main characters, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket, and Groot, and some sweet action scenes with them all.

Within the first 40 seconds, the tone is set, with this simple exchange of words between Peter Quill and Korath the Pursuer:

"Who are you?
"Star-Lord.
"Who?"
"I'm Star-Lord, man. The legendary outlaw? Eh, forget it."

Everytime I've watched this trailer (5 times since starting this article), this part cracks me up, along with several others.  Chris Pratt delivers it perfectly, and if his performance in this trailer in any indication of how the rest of the film is, I have high hopes for it.

The inclusion of John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, a high ranking officer in the Nova Corps, gives the tone of the film a somewhat more comical note as well. Just hearing his voice makes me chuckle on the inside.

The scenery that is used makes the film seem grand, which it should.  It's in line with the setting of the Thor films, advanced and intergalactic.  It sets itself apart from most of the other Marvel films, while still maintaining the same feel, allowing it to fit in perfectly.

And the fact that you get a glimpse of Star-Lord in his battle helmet was awesome.  I was worried that we wouldn't see it in the film, but even if it's only for a couple scenes, I'm glad it's in there.

We also get shots of various characters from the comics, such as Nebula (a mercenary who works for Thanos), Korath the Pursuer (an agent of the Kree empire and ally to Ronan and Thanos), The Collector (who we saw during the mid-credit scene of Thor: The Dark World), and one shot of who I believe to be Ronan the Accuser (who, if it's him, is seen choking Drax mid-air).  I was, however, surprised we didn't get even a glimpse of Yondu, played by Michael Rooker.

Overall, I really enjoyed this trailer, and I believe it'll give everyone who isn't familiar with the property a great sense of what to expect, and will hopefully persuade them to go out and see it, because from the looks of it, I think this film is going to be amazing.

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1, 2014.  And don't forget to check out Captain America: Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, and Ant-Man on July 17, 2015.
