Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 3/21-3/23

Welcome to another edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this weekend were Divergent, Mr. Peabody & Sherman, and Muppets Most Wanted.

This week's newest releases dominated the box office, bringing in over $70 million between the two.  And holding on to a spot in the Top 3 is the most recent animated release, Mr. Peabody & Sherman.

On an interesting side note, the newest faith-based film, God's Not Dead, managed to take the #5 spot, bring in $9.2 million in only 780 theaters.  It ranks as the #1 film among those opening in fewer than 1,000 theaters.

FROZEN UPDATE:  In its 18th week in theaters, Frozen has inched closer to breaking $400 million domestically, bringing in a total of $397.7 million.  It's worldwide total is up to $1.049 billion, making it, currently, the second highest-grossing animated film of all time, and the 12th highest-grossing film of all time, right behind the top grossing animated film, Toy Story 3.  I am predicting it will surpass TS3 this week, and possibly break into the Top 10 highest-grossing films of all time.

Let's take a look at how the Top 3 did this weekend...

1. DIVERGENT

The newest YA book adaptation, Divergent, crushed the box office this weekend, bringing in an impressive $54.6 million on an $85 million production budget.  That's over 60% of the budget in just three days.  If this film continues to have numbers even half this good, I'll have no doubt that the studio will move forward with adaptations of the other books in the series.

2. MUPPETS MOST WANTED

The latest installment of the new Muppets franchise, Muppets Most Wanted, arrived in theaters this weekend, bringing in a lower total than expected, with $17 million.  This is about 40% lower than its predecessor, which made $29.2 in its first weekend out.  Now, even though it's opening was a little low, I still believe it will make plenty of profit, and that we will definitely see more from our beloved muppets.

3. MR. PEABODY & SHERMAN

In its third week out, Mr. Peabody & Sherman brought in a solid $11.8 million.  This puts it at $81.1 million domestically and is expected to reach $100 million by the end of the month.  It's worldwide total has reached $183.3 million.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - Divergent - $54,607,747

#2 - Muppets Most Wanted - $17,005,126

#3 - Mr. Peabody & Sherman - $11,823,558
