Weekend Roundup: Box Office Results for 4/18-4/20 (Easter Weekend)

Welcome to another edition of WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 this weekend were Rio 2, Heaven Is For Real, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Easter weekend is over and Marvel's newest installment in Phase 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, dominated the box office for a third week in a row.  There was another close race this week, this time between the new religious-themed film, Heaven Is For Real and the new animated feature, Rio 2.  The new film, Heaven Is For Real, managed to bring in just enough to take the second spot this week, beating out this weeks other new films, Transcendence and A Haunted House 2.

FROZEN UPDATE:  In its 22nd week on the big screen, Frozen has brought in a worldwide total of $1.129 billion, making it the 6th highest-grossing film of all time, beating out The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Let's take a look at how the Top 3 did this weekend...

1. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

With another great weekend, Marvel Studio's latest Phase 2 film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, has brought in another $25.6 million.  This puts its domestic total at $200.5 million and it's worldwide total at $585.6 million.  It has officially beat out the worldwide total for the first Iron Man film, and is very close to surpassing the worldwide totals for both Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World.

2. HEAVEN IS FOR REAL

Coming in at the #2 spot is the new religious-themed film, Heaven Is For Real.  Based on the true story from the New York Times #1 bestseller of the same name, this film was definitely a good release for this Easter weekend.  Bringing in $22.5 million, Heaven Is For Real managed to inch out Rio 2 by less than $400,000, and combined with its grosses from Wednesday and Thursday, it's domestic total ended up being 29.6 million.

3. RIO 2

In its second week out, Rio 2 has continued to do very well at the box office.  Taking the #3 spot in a tight race, it brought in $22.2 million, for a domestic total of $75 million and a worldwide total of $274.7 million.  This film has definitely been a welcomed surprised for the studio and we will most likely see a third installment in the near future.

Here's a quick rundown of this weekends results:

#1 - Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $25,587,056

#2 - Heaven Is For Real- $22,522,221

#3 - Rio 2 - $22,159,742
