Best in Genre 2013 Winners

Here it is folks!  The winners of our BEST IN GENRE 2013 list.  It was a tough battle, but we were able to pick out the best from each of the following categories:  comedy, drama, action/adventure, sci-fi/fantasy, horror, animation, and comic book.  Let us know what you think in the comments section.  Enjoy!

Comedy:  The World's End

Release Date:  August 23, 2013

This fun sci-fi/comedy had me laughing pretty much the entire time.  Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are always wonderful together, and Edgar Wright's sense of humor and style are ones I'll always enjoy.  A great way to cap off his Cornetto Trilogy, Edgar Wright's The World's End is an absolute must see.

Drama:  Mud

Release Date:  May 10, 2013

An instant hit at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival, this gripping coming-of-age story is a shining star of the 2013 film season.  Matthew McConaughey gives one of the best performances I've ever seen from him and shows everyone that his career is far from over.

Action/Adventure:  Pacific Rim

Release Date:  July 12, 2013

Pacific Rim is the total package. What more do you need? A planet in danger, giant mechs fighting giant monsters, rifts between dimensions, Charlie Day drifting with a kijou, personal drama, Top Gun-esque arguments, kung-fu, Rinko Kikuchi, and Idris Elba. All this and it doesn't treat you like a dummy.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy:  Gravity

Release Date:  October 4, 2013

If there was a 'Most Riveting Film of the Year' category, Gravity would have won all of the votes. But, there is not and it still ended up winning our Sci-Fi/Fantasy category by one point. This film needs to be seen on the big screen in 3D, so stop reading this article and find the last theater in your town that's still playing Gravity in 3D!!!

Horror:  Mama

Release Date:  January 18, 2013

This incredible horror film comes straight from the dark and twisted mind of Guillermo Del Toro, and definitely outdid the other horror films that came out this year.  It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, which isn't an easy task.  If you haven't seen this yet, and you're a fan of horror, do yourself a huge favor and go rent it now.  You won't regret it.

Animation:  Monsters University

Release Date:  June 21, 2013

Monsters University takes all of the classic frat house troupes and makes them family friendly. Which sounds like a bad idea. But, luckily, it works out for everyone. This film is hilarious and the voice acting is great.

Comic Book Movie:  Iron Man 3

Release Date:  May 3, 2013

Personally, I think this is the best Iron Man film. Because, it made a very simple decision to be light hearted and have fun. Unlike, the first two which found themselves torn at the seems over which way to go, dark or light. As a result this is the most entertaining Marvel film out there. Plus, stripped down Iron Man is the best!
